Unit Mods |
Back in 2018 when I was in Spriters Domain, I did a couple of visual and audio mods for Metal Slug Attack, SNK's newest Metal Slug game at the time.
So here is an exhaustive list and download links to all the stuff I did during that time! |
Saigo
Published on: February 9, 2018
Saigo is one of the very first mod I've made, replacing the Samurai Infantry (Wrath) or Japanese Assault Force
unit.
The idea behind this was to try and recreate how the look of the Japanese soldiers of the Division 6 before they went
into hiding for 2 years. So I added a pair of puttees, a jacket, a backpack with a talkie-walkie in it, and a clean-shaven face.
The name Saigo was directly taken from the protagonist of the movie Letters from Iwo Jima, a neat WW2 film
focusing on the Japanese side of the war.

Restored Null Fighter
Published on: February 10, 2018
The Restored Null Fighter is a mod replacing the Samurai Plane unit.
Like the Saigo mod, the idea was to design a fully-assembled Null Fighter, by adding a rotor, the rest of the wings
and windshields, and - of course - some gasoline!
Ajirabian Decontamination Forces (ADF)
Published on: February 14, 2018
The ADF is a mod replacing the Hazmat Soldier unit.
After seeing multiple times that Hazmat guy in the image from the 10th Anniversary site, I was tempted to do a mod
about it by fixing the headgear onto the Hazmat Soldier unit. But due to size problems, I had to reduce a bit the size
of the mask. Still looks alright, I guess!
I then finally recolored the uniform of the unit in off-white and the gloves and boots in black/grey.
Iron Iso Mk II
Published on: March 31, 2018
The Iron Iso Mk II is a mod replacing the Golden Iso unit.
Lore:
"After seeing how the Iron Iso Mk I failed on the battlefield due to its slow performances, the Rebels came up with
an updated version being capable of sustaining more damage and performing more rapidly: the Mk II.
This specific Iso is supervised by a Rebel Sergeant."
The idea to add a Rebel Sergeant and change the paint job of the tank comes from MS: SV-001's final mission,
where there's an Iron Iso Mk II with a Rebel in front of it at the beginning of the mission. And that's pretty much it!
After releasing this mod, I decided to update it by changing the projectile to make it look like the one from MS: SV-001's
prototype.

Division 6 Overhaul
Published on: April 8, 2018
The Division 6 Overhaul is a mod updating the Samurai Units.
The original units were created from RandomRebelSoldier's sprite sheets, but there were several problems with the ripped
sprites (mostly palette related), so the problems were ported over to MSA.
This mod basically fixes all of these problems and other similar things!

Minkong Crab Family
Published on: April 12, 2018
The Minkong Crab Familyis a mod replacing the Minkong Crab (Green) unit.
The idea to make this came from the MS3 artworks I found in Neo Geo Freak: Issue 7/2000, where these enemies are organised
right next to each other. So why not make a mod with all of them?
I'm particularly proud of this mod, mainly because it was a true nightmare to correctly place the frames. But it came out really nicely!
Replica Assassin
Published on: April 17, 2018
The Replica Assassin is a mod replacing the Special Force (Rope) unit.
After seeing a design from fellow spriter NightSen, I decided to make a basic reskin of this unit based on
the Replica Assassin from F.E.A.R. A Damn fun FPS!
Invaders Overhaul
Published on: April 30, 2018
The Invaders Overhaul is a mod updating the Invader units.
At the time, most of the MS6 sprite sheets found online had incorrect darkened palettes applied to them. These were later ported
over to MSA without any edits, leaving them still uncorrected.
Since a new way to find the correct palettes from MS6 has been found, I took the time to correct the units' palettes.

Regular Defense Turret (RDT)
Published on: July 6, 2018
The RDTis a mod replacing the Scrap Cannon MK II unit.
Lore:
"After the defeat of the Tetsuyuki by Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving, Regular troops stole the defense turret on its
right wing and converted it into an automatic turret.
It is now installed near Ridge 256 as a defense turret, along with a Regular soldier standing right next to it to oversee
its performances."
The idea actually came from a MSA player by the name of Mr. Elite! He's also into the unused stuff of the main
series, and he gave me that idea a while back when the Scrap Cannon MK II wasn't even out.
I reassambled some of the sprites sheets I've made and made this turret out of different sprites appearing in MS: SV-001.
Only the manhole is from a different game (MS3).
Donkey Rider
Published on: July 16, 2018
The Donkey Rider is a mod replacing the Elite Arabian Camel Rider unit.
Lore:
"After the P.F. attack near the Rebel mining base, a surviving Miner managed to steal a Regular issue pistol
and tame a Donkey Slug to continue to mine under Rebel supervision. From now on, he can transport rocks more
easily and defend himself from any attack."
The original idea was just: "What if I replaced the Arabian with a Miner?", and so here we are! I decided to replace
the camel with a donkey later in the making, where it wouldn't have made much sense to still have one.
KT-21
Published on: September 4, 2018
The KT-21 is a mod replacing the Golden Di-Cokka unit.
History:
"During the early stages of the First Modern War, several KT-21 tanks were manufactured as support vehicles to the
Rebel troops. However, the KTs had clunky movements and were way too armored for their size, resulting in dozens
of destroyed KTs in just a week.
An improved version called the "Di-Cokka" quickly took the role of the obsolete KT-21, fixing all of the kinks of the
earlier version. Now, the forgotten KT-21s are only rarely used for desperate measures and suicide missions."
The idea of replacing the Cokka with the good old KT isn't recent. In fact, I had this idea in mind since January 2018!
But I couldn't find any good tank to replace it with, due to the proportions of the KT.
Fastfoward to August, and I finally found a way to effectively mod it into MSA. Simply resize a few parts and the KT-21
is finally here!
Published on: February 22, 2018
The Japanese Bunker is a mod replacing stage02_05.
The stage itself is directly taken from MS3's bunker area in Mission 4. Then I added dead Regular and Japanese
soldiers and other stuff to make it look like a battle recently happened.

The Ronbertburg City's Rooftops is a mod replacing stage14_01.
This mod uses the infamous unused rooftops of MSX! I had to resize a few things to fit on the screen, but at least the
main area is mostly unedited and still good looking!

Sammer's Kingdom
Published on: February 22, 2018
Sammer's Kingdom is a mod replacingThe Japanese Army BGM.
The audio comes from Super Paper Mario's chapter 6: Sammer's Kingdom. A nice little Japanese style BGM plays
when you go and visit King Sammer.

Black Cats
Published on: March 31, 2018
Black Cats is a mod replacing The Japanese Army BGM.
The audio comes from one of the latest missions of Call of Duty: World at War: Black Cats. A pretty intense music
mainly composed of drums.

Enhanced Japanese Soldiers Sounds
Published on: March 31, 2018
The enhanced Japanese Soldiers sounds are 3 mods replacing the ones in MSA.
These sounds are slightly better in quality than the ones already in MSA, but there's also an extra death sound
replacing the high-pitch scream.
Although they don't sound that good in preview, they sound way better in-game.

SV-001 Preparing to Fire
Published on: April 1, 2018
The SV-001 Preparing to Fire is a mod replacing the noise playing when you click something.
The audio comes from the first Metal Slug, when the SV-001 loads a shell and prepares to fire in the intro. Much
better than the slurping noise to be honest!

DKC:TF Loading Screen
Published on: May 27, 2018
The DKC:TF Loading Screen is a mod replacing The Military System (MS7) BGM.
This audio comes from one of my favorite games of all time: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze! It's the loading
screen theme with a custom loop.

Sawmill Thrill (Intro)
Published on: May 27, 2018
The Sawmill Thrill (Intro) is a mod replacing The Military System (MS7) BGM.
Another music from DKC: TF! It originally plays in the intro of the minecart level Sawmill Thrill in world 2.

Ridge 256
Published on: March 21, 2018
Ridge 256 is the first full menu mod I've made, but still holds up pretty well! It is
themed after the Rebel Army and its military allies.
It was overall pretty fun to make: coming up with some ideas to fit the icons, making a day, afternoon and night
BGs, etc. Some icons are way harder to make than others, but still: it was cool to do!
I also tried to only use assets from the first 4 Metal Slugs, but I still used very few assets from MS4.
All About Love
Published on: May 11, 2018
All About Love is an Alien themed menu mod that was requested by Nowan Miracle.
This mod was considerably more challengin to make than the Ridge 256 one, since Alien-related sprites are not the
most common thing in the MS series apart from MS2/X, MS3 and MS6.
Japanese Soldier Attack Button
Published on: March 26, 2018
The Japanese Soldier Attack Button is an attack button mod for the default one.
It replaces the default attack button with a Japanese soldier idle, shuffling and falling!
Rebel APC
Published on: April 10, 2018
The Rebel APC is a mod updating a bit the design of the Rebel Bus+ base.
The Rebel Bus+ was originally featured in an image on the 10th Anniversary site, and just came back fairly recently
as a player base skin. I made a few changes with the shading and the coloring to make it a bit better!
Some of my mod attempts during 2018 didn't entirely pan out for various reasons (graphical limitations, flawed concepts,
lack of ideas, etc.). So rather than leaving them gather dust in my disk drive, here's a list of the more interesting ones!
Dara Dara Buster
The Dara Dara Buster is a mod that would have replaced the Dararin Dara Dara unit.
It would have added a regular Soldier right next to it, waiting for the right occasion to bust it with a grenade!
I came pretty close to finish it, but the soldier just didn't pop out enough to make this mod special.
Hunter
The Hunter is a mod that would have replaced the Pirate unit.
Since both the Pirate and Hunter enemies from the arcade games already shared a lot of traits from the Ajirabians from MS2,
I figured I would try and convert the Pirate unit into a Hunter one. While some animations were really easy to replace, some others
were more complicated due to the different sprite sizes.
Eventually, I stopped working on this one and decided to try something more original
by making the Donkey Rider.
Regular Bradley
The Regular Bradley is a mod that would have replaced the Golden Bradley unit.
The idea to make this came roughly at the same time as the Regular Defense Turret mod. Designing the idle sprites
with the little gunner sitting in the front was really fun, but I quickly realized it was gonna be a pain to actually finish it.
In the end I decided to focus on the RDT instead, since aside from the gunner in the front, it was basically a glorified recolor.
Iron Iso MK II (Alt)
The Iron Iso MK II (Alt) is a mod that would have replaced the Golden Iso unit.
This alternative version of my other Iron Iso mod has an extra normal Rebel taking cover in the back. As opposed to the Sergeant, this Rebel would have died along with the tank!
This mod was very close to being finished, but I didn't think it gelled well with the colors of the Iso and the Sergeant, so I released the first version instead.
ANGRY MAN COKKA
The Angry Man Cokka is a mod that would have replaced the Morden Di-Cokka unit.
To be honest, I don't know exactly what I was thinking when making this... I was even confused to find this in my modding folder.
This one of my many attempts to mod the infamous and unused KT-21 back into MSA, but apparently I tried to mix the angry NPC guy
from MSX with it for maximum weirdness. Could have been a fun unit, perhaps!
